Diaper Derby

This past Saturday, Josh was 1 of 4 contestants in the Diaper Derby that took place during halftime of the UVA men's basketball game. Brandon works with the girl who was in charge of it. If you don't know what a Diaper Derby is, it's basically a baby-crawling race. The baby starts at one end with one parent and is supposed to crawl to the parent at the other end. If it's on a basketball court, it's usually from half-court to the free throw line. It's really funny because the babies have no idea that they're racing, they don't know what racing is, and they have no idea what they're "supposed" to do. Some babies crawl almost to the other parent at the finish line but then turn around or freeze and then another baby ends up winning. It's just so unpredictable. I didn't really know what to expect of Josh. I mean he can crawl really fast when he wants to but he also gets distracted very easily so I figured he'd end up crawling somewhere random that caught his attention.

When we first got onto the court (we were on the side closest to the UVA student cheer section aka the "Wahooligans") Brandon held Josh up toward the "Wahooligans" and Josh waved and then put his hands up in the air. The crowd started cheering for him. That by itself was hilarious and couldn't have been prompted or staged any more perfectly. I was already cracking up at his response to the situation and loved that he was such a crowd-pleaser. So the race started and he started crawling pretty quickly toward me and the crowd went wild. But then Josh stopped and looked at the crowd and threw his hands up in the air and stretched as high as he could as though he were saying, "Umm a little louder please!!" Brandon helped make it even funnier by moving his arms up and down and putting his hand to his ear as though to say "louder! louder!" and Josh just sat there with his arms up looking around at the crowd for a few minutes. The radio announcer said, "He's raising the roof! He's raising the roof!" It was so hilarious. So yeah he just sat there the rest of the race until another little girl won. I just still can't get over Josh being such a crowd-pleaser. He truly seemed to enjoy the spotlight, the noise, the lights, everything about the environment. What a funny baby.
